Martina Anderson and Karen Mullan to step down at the next election.

Empty Waterfront Hall for Sinn Fein Ard Fheis

Confirmation that I do not intend to stand at the next Assembly Election. There is a privilege in being a public representative standing up for people. I will miss not doing that #LoveDerry pic.twitter.com/anRPIAhzod — Martina Anderson MLA (@M_AndersonSF) May 4, 2021 And followed by Karen Mullan just a few minutes later I confirm that I will not be seeking a nomination to stand for @sinnfeinireland at the next Assembly Election. It has been a great privilege to represent and …

Martina Anderson: The days of the British State granting impunity to its own are coming to an end

Following on from a conference organised by the University of Ulster on victims and dealing with the past, Sinn Fein’s MEP, Martina Anderson writes for Slugger arguing for a new focus on the British states involvement in the Troubles and how it deals with victims. On the 27th and 28th Feb 2014 I invited a delegation of victims of state violence to Brussels to discuss with MEPs the impact of state collusion under the heading ‘Britain’s Dirty War in Ireland’. The deep …

Martina Anderson MEP: “and if the British government lifts its ban on Executive access to the EIB…”

No update yet from Sinn Féin on the meeting they chose to trail a couple of days ago between three of their MEPs, led by the Derry Northern Ireland representative, Martina Anderson, and “the Vice-Chairman of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Jonathan Taylor”.  But let’s hope they were better briefed than the 15 July press release suggests, otherwise the only reaction is likely to be a rolling of eyes by Jonathan Taylor, Vice-President of the EIB, formerly Director General for Financial Services at …

FSB Euro Election Hustings #FSBNIHustings

This morning the Federation of Small Businesses in Northern Ireland hosted the first debate amongst all of the European candidates (Jim Allister didn’t turn up and Basil McCrea was representing NI21.) The event was attended by around 80 people at the top floor of the Europa Hotel. The debate kicked off with each candidate setting out their pitch about what they can/are bringing to the European Union. There did seem to be a general consensus that Northern Ireland was not …

Sinn Fein does not expect to win a border poll but would relish the opportunity for a public conversation…

listen to ‘Martina Anderson says republicans don’t believe a border poll now will bring about a united Ireland’ on Audioboo UUC Journalism student David Thompson interviewed Derry based Sinn Fein MLA Martina Anderson yesterday and got some very interesting and candid thoughts about the party’s position on the kind of border poll Gerry Adams called for at Gulladuff last weekend… Mick FealtyMick is founding editor of Slugger. Contested Space Programme: “What’s strange is that we haven’t heard anything about this until now…”

On 22 January, after the International Fund for Ireland (IFI) announced their £2million Peace Walls Programme, I asked about the absence of OFMdFM’s £4million Contested Space Programme – announced in March last year. On 27 January the Northern Ireland Executive Junior Minister, Sinn Féin’s Martina Anderson, launched the Early Years Faces and Spaces – Children’s Shared Spaces project – “funded jointly by OFMDFM and Atlantic Philanthropies Contested Spaces programme.” The Junior Minister’s statement is somewhat short on detail, but the ‘notes …

Londonderry’s bid for All-Ireland Fleadh in 2013 to go ahead

At the second tiime of asking, Londonderry branch delegates of Comhaltas have agreed to bid to host the All-Ireland Fleadh during the UK City of Culture year by 13 votes to 1.  As the BBC report notes Some Comhaltas members, who initially opposed the move because of the UK link in Derry’s City of Culture 2013 title, did not attend. [Lost in traffic? – Ed]  Possibly…  Meanwhile, Sinn Féin’s Martina Anderson has launched her campaign “to neutralise the U.K. prefix…”  …

“The only way to neutralise the U.K. prefix…”

Nevin pointed at a rare tree of relevance in the comment zone yesterday.  It’s the full statement from the former Sinn Féin “Director of Unionist Engagement“, now “Sinn Féin Junior Minister”, Martina Anderson, on the reluctance of some within Comhaltas to host the all-Ireland Fleadh in Londonderry during the UK City of Culture year.  [That would be the Northern Ireland Executive Junior Minister? – Ed]  Quite.  It’s now being covered, 4 days after being issued, by the Derry Journal.  How …
