Gerry Adams on Thomas ‘Slab’ Murphy’s tax evasion: Yeah but, no but, yeah but, no but…

After the guilty verdict in the trial of, “key supporter of the Sinn Féin peace strategy”, Thomas ‘Slab’ Murphy on 9 charges of tax evasion, Gerry Adams, TD, declared that he had “no comment to make until the legal process has been concluded”. Following criticism of that position the Sinn Féin president has, apparently, decided that some comment would be appropriate after all. The journal.ie has his initial further comment, and the Sinn Féin website has a further, further version.  From the …

Question for Gerry Adams: Is Thomas ‘Slab’ Murphy still “a good republican”?

As the BBC reports, 66-year-old Thomas Murphy has been found guilty of nine charges of tax evasion at Ireland’s non-jury Special Criminal Court. When, in March 2006, there was a series of co-ordinated raids on properties in the UK and Ireland connected to Thomas ‘Slab’ Murphy – who had been named previously as both the UK’s richest smuggler and a former Provisional IRA Chief of Staff – the Sinn Féin president, now Louth TD, Gerry Adams declared, “Tom Murphy is not a …

“Are people certain the proceeds from the organised crime is not finding its way into the [SF] political project?”

Micheal Martin took his second pot shot of the week at Sinn Fein in Leader’s Questions in Dail Eireann in as many days. But this was a more forensic strike than yesterday‘s more on-the-hoof affair. He starts with a reference to £28 Million raised by the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) from individuals with “connections or associations” with the Provisional IRA, and then from here asks… Are people absolutely certain Taoiseach that any of the proceeds from the organised crime that’s been going …

Dublin High Court grants CAB €600,000 judgement against convicted Provisional IRA man

Two men from Londonderry arrested with Bullman were released without charge at the time. In March …

Mr Noonan “refused to engage in a meaningful manner”

With the economy and the state of public finances the focus of the recent Irish general election, despite attempts to pretend otherwise, here’s a report worth wider consideration.  Ireland’s Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) has been granted control of the assets of John Noonan, of Tallaght, Co Dublin, who had provided security for the film and music industry through his company Strand Security Services Ltd.  Mr Noonan had declared himself a bankrupt last March and had debts of €4.2 million. From the …

Flogging a dead horse – redux

The Irish Times reports from Dublin High Court, where convicted drug dealer John Gilligan, giving evidence yesterday in a case taken by him to block the Criminal Assets Bureau seizing properties from him and his family, told the court that the bulk of his wealth came from gambling.  From the Irish Times When some of his evidence suggested betting runs in which he doubled his money Mr Justice Feeney asked him: “Have you ever heard of any gambler making a …
