Destruction of Orange Halls – An Analysis

This thread is for information purposes. This thread has been created to discuss the issue of sectarian property crime. This analysis is based on a database of attacks on Orange Halls, while comprehensive it does not claim to be the full list. The database focuses on attempts to damage or destroy halls. Other attacks such as graffiti, damage to cars, stonethrowing etc are not included.

The database lists four attacks on Orange Halls between 1971 to 1988. Three halls were destroyed, 2 in Greater Belfast area and 1 in County Cavan. The fourth attack was the Tullyvallen massacre were 5 Lodge members were murdered by the PIRA.

A pattern of attacks emerged from 1989 and 245 attacks have occurred since then. The rate of attacks each year have been as follows:
1989 Total 3
1990 Total 8
1991 Total 10
1992 Total 19
1993 Total 12
1994 Total 9
1995 Total 37
1996 Total 26
