October 04, 2005 Window's in Paisley's church smashed? Buried in this story carrying the remarks of Bertie Ahern on the Carnmoney threats to Catholic graves is a reference to dozens of windows being broken in the Martyr's Memorial church on the Ravenhill Road.
Does anyone know who the suspected culprits are and if the attack was sectarian or just bored kids with bad prospects and no support? Would it do more harm than good for some SF figure to condemn the vandalism? Posted by: Shay Begorrah at October 4, 2005 05:34 PM Shay: If this is the same attack I heard about, Alex Maskey was pretty quick to condemn it actually. God love him.... Posted by: levee at October 4, 2005 06:51 PM Attacking churches is completely unacceptable and must be condemned unequivocally; anyone caught doing it should be prosecuted and jailed not only for vandalism and destruction, but for enacting hate crime. Today has been a slightly better day in terms of our politicians showing leadership against this kind of attack. I did read that Maskey was swift to condemn - fair play to him. At the same time, I noted that Ian Paisley has condemned what is going on in Carnmoney in equally strong terms - I think it was in the News Letter. There is hope for us yet. Posted by: Comrade Stalin at October 4, 2005 07:08 PM BBC had this story last week and also the News Letter Posted by: Alan2 at October 4, 2005 10:16 PM Given the location of Paisleys church I suspect the attack was less to do with sectarianism and more to do with vandalism. The suggestion above by shay of an inter denominational fund is superb and I'm sure all right thinking people would accept this outright. Attacks on Churches, Graveyards and places of worship are particularly heinous but all attacks are wrong and need to be brought to an abrupt halt, the problem is the Governments Irish/British prefer to bury their head in the sand and pretend nothings happening!
