October 06, 2005 Running the church on solar power If the green movement is looking for local low impact energy champions, then they need look no further than St Oliver Plunkett's Church in West Belfast. What a lovely feelgood story.. I'll just point out the caveats since the BBC journalist failed to do so. There's no mention of the number of solar panels required to produce the 4000 units of "eco-friendly electricity" the report claims. Not every building has the surface area the roof of a church has to put those panels on. And there's no mention of the percentage of total energy consumption those 4000 units represent for the church concerned. But 4000 is such a lovely round number. Posted by: peteb at October 6, 2005 11:51 AM Feeling a bit grumpy this morning, Pete? Posted by: smcgiff at October 6, 2005 12:21 PM Not at all, smcgiff. Just pointing to the relevant facts that are missing from the story. Posted by: peteb at October 6, 2005 12:41 PM ‘There's no mention of the number of solar panels required to produce the 4000 units of "eco-friednly electricity" the report claims.’ Neither did it mention the width, length and breadth of a solar panel or it’s weight, colour, flexibility. Nor did the report get into the physics of solar energy. None of the above or what you requested would have added to the message the piece was trying to get across. Solar panels are eco friendly. ‘Not every building has the surface area the roof of a church has to put those panels on.’ Correct. Not every building has the same energy requirements of a church. Like for like. 'And there's no mention of the percentage of total energy consumption those 4000 units represent for the church concerned.' Seeing as solar panels repay themselves in a shortish number of years, the percentage contribution is irrelevant. ‘But 4000 is such a lovely round number.’ What ever turns you on! Posted by: smcgiff at October 6, 2005 12:58 PM smcgiff "None of the above or what you requested would have added to the message the piece was trying to get across. Solar panels are eco friendly." Indeed. It is a report that is promoting a message. ie not really a report at all. Call me old-fashioned.. but I like all the facts included when such a message is being presented. Posted by: peteb at October 6, 2005 01:03 PM Old-fashioned, ‘It is a report that is promoting a message. ie not really a report at all.’ Report? The Beeb only refer to it as a story. Posted by: smcgiff at October 6, 2005 01:24 PM peteb it sounds to me like you'd start a fight in a phone-box today! Perfect DUP material... :-) Posted by: Donnie at October 6, 2005 01:39 PM Seems everyones full of hot air today. Just couldn`t resist it!!!!!!! Posted by: Dick Doggins at October 6, 2005 02:54 PM |
