There's no reason to doubt that estimate. You just can't get the Irish News much further south than Dundalk, but DI is available pretty much every where I've been in the last ten months.

I buy Daily Ireland every day, never miss it. It's widely available all over Dublin in all the shops and petrol stations. Even in the Dublin 4 shops strangely enough. Must be a few Fenians with mercs hiding out there !
I only ever got a funny look off a red-faced guy once when it had initially launched, so I bought a second copy (just that time) to try and give the loser a heart-attack. Looking back I reckon it was one of those Evening Herald 'journalists' out witch-hunting for Republicans. They are getting a little bit obsessive these days - must be the orders from their Lord/Owner O'Reilly muppet.

Do you count An Phoblachts numbers along with those of Daily Ireland?

Keith, just from looking at that, they don't seem to have figures for the DI. Are they linked in any way to ABC?

Beano, the circulation figures quoted on that site are vrified by the ABC. AFAIK the Daily Provo doesn't allow its sales in the Republic to be counted (probably for fear of embarrasment). From what I'm told there are at least 30 LOCAL papers that outsell DI in this country.

Another interesting thing the The Nuachtain Group of Newspapers aka Andytown News Group figures had to be re-audited by ABC. It seems

"332 copies have been moved from Newstrade at Basic Cover Price to Newstrade at Below Basic Cover Price."

Probably just a simple administrative error..

I find the attention that this guy is getting from broadcasters and media around the island incredible. As Slug points out earlier, the Larne Times sells 3,000 copies more - are we going to see an interview with the editor there?

The paper is very poor quality and is clearly on route to commercial failure - why is everyone obsessed with it?

If it did anything other than reinforce the cosy republican consensus you might have had a point.

Cruachlann - what Murdoch / O'Reilly consensus is that? Given that all of Daily Ireland's energies appear to be going into getting money from Government in the six counties, that means it sees itself as competing against The News Letter, The Irish News and the Belfast Telegraph.

Last time I looked, only the Belfast Telegraph is owned by either of the people you mention. Also, its main product is an evening newspaper which isn't competing with DI at all, which leaves the NEws Letter and the Irish News. One of those is family owned and the other was bought recently by Johnston Press.

They've now lost this window as well (at least in Dublin) with two new free morning papers since Monday. Perhaps it's time for a new by-line "Daily Ireland, the paper you can't even give away."

I read todays editorials from the Daily Ireland over on Nuzhound.
One of the opinion pieces is dedicated to the fact that an estate agent in the republic of Ireland advertises homes in Northern Ireland as foreign property.

Now, I accept that this could be considered worth a mention, but to make it the subject of an editorial is laughable.
The thinly veiled request for a boycott of the estate agent would also be laughable if not for the idea that using incorrect terminology seems suitable grouds for punishment in the views of the Daily Irelands opinion makers, whoever they may be.

Let's be honest, Ireland doesn't need or want this kind of nonsense, and if this is any kind of indication as to the level Daily Ireland is setting for itself, then it will fail, no doubt about it.

Having initially wanted this paper to fail I've come round to the idea that in the absence of physical force republicanism, it would do no harm to have a decent media outlet for legitimte republican aspirations and views.
unfortunately, after watching Mairtin O'Muilleoirs sub par performance on Hearts and Minds (Noel Thompson was going easy on him, a damning indictment if ever there was one) and now reading this embarrasing editorial, it seems clear to me that this paper needs more able people at the helm.
