Daily Ireland: levelling off or heading back down?
Interesting Daily Ireland figures from ABC. The primary figure shows a slight drop from the last figures. It will be hard news for the newpaper's bid to break into the difficult all Ireland paper market. It won't do the paper's campaign to bring in serious avertising revenues in any good.

The link to ABC just arrives at the home page, Mick.

You do realise that ABC has no way of auditing figures in the republic?

Daily Ireland claims it sells 7,000 copies a day down south...

Posted by: Shore Road Resident at October 8, 2005 12:57 PM

The ABC figures are reported for 'NI + ROI'.

Posted by: slug at October 8, 2005 01:12 PM

SRR,

There's no reason to doubt that estimate. You just can't get the Irish News much further south than Dundalk, but DI is available pretty much every where I've been in the last ten months.

'You just can't get the Irish News much further south'

I see it for sale all over the place in Limerick.

Posted by: southern observer at October 8, 2005 01:57 PM

I buy Daily Ireland every day, never miss it. It's widely available all over Dublin in all the shops and petrol stations. Even in the Dublin 4 shops strangely enough. Must be a few Fenians with mercs hiding out there !
I only ever got a funny look off a red-faced guy once when it had initially launched, so I bought a second copy (just that time) to try and give the loser a heart-attack. Looking back I reckon it was one of those Evening Herald 'journalists' out witch-hunting for Republicans. They are getting a little bit obsessive these days - must be the orders from their Lord/Owner O'Reilly muppet.

Do you count An Phoblachts numbers along with those of Daily Ireland?

Posted by: raff at October 8, 2005 02:24 PM

If they sell 7,000 down south that means they are only selling 1,600 up north

Posted by: Numbers McGoo at October 8, 2005 02:32 PM

My local newsagent does not stock it - it stocks everything else.

Posted by: slug at October 8, 2005 02:37 PM

O Muilleoir was obviosuly correct on Hearts & Minds, Thursday last when he spoke highly of the sophistication of the nationalist electorate. They won't buy the rubbish he churns out and has the cheek to call a newspaper -

Posted by: Cynic at October 8, 2005 03:11 PM

Credit where credit is due. They trounced us in the online petition battle with an impressive 62 signatures to our meagre 24.

Any news on the McDowell libel writ? None months on and it's terribly quiet.

Posted by: Jimmy_Sands at October 8, 2005 04:40 PM

All I'm pointing out, Mick, is that the estimate for the republic is just that - an estimate. It can't have been audited because ABC doesn't (yet) have an auditing system in place in the south.

Posted by: Shore Road Resident at October 8, 2005 04:45 PM

The 8,762 comes under the heading "UK + ROI".

Posted by: slug at October 8, 2005 06:17 PM

Ulster is so provincial. It's even more than that. Like a dream world.

Mike is writing about a local newspaper with a limited and biased readership as though that publication generated a new idea.

It's the same story over and over again.

The western world has long ago left Ulster behind to sort out its medieval neurosis among the folks still there and to join the rest of us when all of the nonsense is finished with.

Please do me a favor and don't answer this post. I'm disgusted enough as it is.

These kind of circulation figures are pathetic. Why anyone would advertise in such a "newspaper" is beyond me. I suspect that the only thing keeping it on its feet is some donations from SF/IRA "fundraising" (using the Provo dictionary version of that word.

Keith, just from looking at that, they don't seem to have figures for the DI. Are they linked in any way to ABC?

Posted by: beano at October 9, 2005 01:19 PM

Beano, the circulation figures quoted on that site are vrified by the ABC. AFAIK the Daily Provo doesn't allow its sales in the Republic to be counted (probably for fear of embarrasment). From what I'm told there are at least 30 LOCAL papers that outsell DI in this country.

Posted by: Keith M at October 9, 2005 03:19 PM

ABC Figures:

Daily Ireland:
8,762 actively purchased

Larne Times:
11,420 actively purchased.

Posted by: slug at October 9, 2005 03:31 PM

Just to clarify. I'm reliably informed that the Irish News is available in most towns and villages in Ireland, but they have a policy of keeping returns to an absolute minimum. Interview with Mairtin to follow.

Posted by: Mick Fealty at October 9, 2005 04:59 PM

Slug,

That's the cheekiest post I've seen on Slugger in a long time, hehe.

Posted by: Dualta at October 9, 2005 05:52 PM

Interview with Mairtin to follow, Mick?

Or we could quote him from the Press Gazette -

"The Belfast Telegraph gives away 10,000 copies a day and that's a very tempting model that would bring us up over 20,000. With the launch of Metro in Dublin and the new Irish Daily Mail expected shortly, I think the options should be cast open as we go forward."

Yeah.. just give away 10,000 copies and then claim to have doubled your circulation figures.

[/sarcasm]

Posted by: peteb at October 9, 2005 06:02 PM

That'll do Pete.

Posted by: Mick Fealty at October 9, 2005 06:24 PM

Just quoting him, Mick :)

Although the Belfast Telegraph [Mon-Fri] multiple copies/bulk sales are actually 9,068

... with an additional 87,187 actively purchased copies.

It's not really a suitable comparison.

Posted by: peteb at October 9, 2005 06:29 PM

"we sell more in Northern Ireland than the Irish Times."

[/partitionism]

Posted by: slug at October 9, 2005 06:50 PM

what about the 'east belfast observer' i remember seeing linked on here during the summer?

Posted by: dude at October 9, 2005 11:56 PM

Another interesting thing the The Nuachtain Group of Newspapers aka Andytown News Group figures had to be re-audited by ABC. It seems

"332 copies have been moved from Newstrade at Basic Cover Price to Newstrade at Below Basic Cover Price."

Probably just a simple administrative error..

An interview with Mairtin to follow? Why?

I find the attention that this guy is getting from broadcasters and media around the island incredible. As Slug points out earlier, the Larne Times sells 3,000 copies more - are we going to see an interview with the editor there?

The paper is very poor quality and is clearly on route to commercial failure - why is everyone obsessed with it?

At least Daily Ireland breaks the cosy anti-republican consensus of Murdoch and O'Reilly. Tus maith leath na hoibre.

At least Daily Ireland breaks the cosy anti-republican consensus of Murdoch and O'Reilly. Tus maith leath na hoibre.

If it did anything other than reinforce the cosy republican consensus you might have had a point.

Posted by: Ringo at October 11, 2005 01:04 PM

Cruachlann - what Murdoch / O'Reilly consensus is that? Given that all of Daily Ireland's energies appear to be going into getting money from Government in the six counties, that means it sees itself as competing against The News Letter, The Irish News and the Belfast Telegraph.

Last time I looked, only the Belfast Telegraph is owned by either of the people you mention. Also, its main product is an evening newspaper which isn't competing with DI at all, which leaves the NEws Letter and the Irish News. One of those is family owned and the other was bought recently by Johnston Press.

Don't believe everything you read in your paper Cruachlann

Posted by: Northern FF at October 11, 2005 02:56 PM

I buy it everyday in Galway.

90 cent well spent.

It's an alternative to the Dublin papers long may it survive.

Posted by: Ger at October 12, 2005 04:16 PM

"Yeah.. just give away 10,000 copies and then claim to have doubled your circulation figures."

They've now lost this window as well (at least in Dublin) with two new free morning papers since Monday. Perhaps it's time for a new by-line "Daily Ireland, the paper you can't even give away."

Posted by: Keith M at October 12, 2005 06:05 PM

I read todays editorials from the Daily Ireland over on Nuzhound.
One of the opinion pieces is dedicated to the fact that an estate agent in the republic of Ireland advertises homes in Northern Ireland as foreign property.

Now, I accept that this could be considered worth a mention, but to make it the subject of an editorial is laughable.
The thinly veiled request for a boycott of the estate agent would also be laughable if not for the idea that using incorrect terminology seems suitable grouds for punishment in the views of the Daily Irelands opinion makers, whoever they may be.

Let's be honest, Ireland doesn't need or want this kind of nonsense, and if this is any kind of indication as to the level Daily Ireland is setting for itself, then it will fail, no doubt about it.

Having initially wanted this paper to fail I've come round to the idea that in the absence of physical force republicanism, it would do no harm to have a decent media outlet for legitimte republican aspirations and views.
unfortunately, after watching Mairtin O'Muilleoirs sub par performance on Hearts and Minds (Noel Thompson was going easy on him, a damning indictment if ever there was one) and now reading this embarrasing editorial, it seems clear to me that this paper needs more able people at the helm.
