September 19, 2005 Loyalists should not trust London or Dublin Father Des Wilson argues that the only people Loyalist communities can trust is the Republican movement. For those who rejected my comments that nationalism did not accept that Unionism can have rational basis for the issues it raises I give you the following comment: "rational political opposition from republicans and nationalists on the one side, violent anti-intellectual opposition from the unionists on the other." Posted by: fair_deal at September 19, 2005 03:15 PM Very hard to play the ball after reading this Total tribal nonsense, blind to the nature of his own side and ignorant, dismissive and insulting to the other This piece plays to the gallery, reinforcing bitter, devisive dogma and characturing the other side. Which probably explains why loyalists will never go to him for advice, or indeed believe a word that comes out of his mouth. Posted by: idunnomeself at September 19, 2005 03:52 PM This is the second rant from (Father?)Des Wilson I have read in recent weeks and this one makes makes even more disappointing reading than the last one - a bitter, cynical, dismissive and patronising article but at least imaginative on his ideas of widely held Unionist views. I especially find amusing his sarcastic take on the dangers of "preachers" - what does he think of his (former?)position and what he is using it for today! Also was it just me or did the good Father's article contain a definite sympathic tone for the plight of the IRA. (with his narrow view he sort of reminds me of someone else whom he appears to be making veiled criticism of in his "preachers" rants - his opposite number perhaps?) Posted by: Democratic at September 19, 2005 03:53 PM An astounding piece of bias from a 'religious' figure. This follows on from another Fr's obsession with Linfield Fc not playing catholics (when they have had too numerous to mention). Also takes me back to when Fr Denis Faul used to call for all the release of IRA prisioners - lovely. Posted by: Antrim Springfarm at September 19, 2005 04:51 PM Man of the cloth? That's one dangerous sounding man. Posted by: GavBelfast at September 19, 2005 06:20 PM The truth is only dangerous to those who would deny it. Posted by: spirit-level at September 19, 2005 07:12 PM AR, The comparison with Mgr Faul is grossly unfair. He has at no small personal risk regularly stood up to provisionalism. It'll be a cold day in hell before Squinter offers him a column. Posted by: Jimmy_Sands at September 19, 2005 07:40 PM Remember these thoughts were and probably still are going through the mind of a priest? No wonder the Catholic population are shit scared of them. Posted by: Dave at September 19, 2005 08:18 PM "Truth", spirit-level? How come? Posted by: GavBelfast at September 19, 2005 08:25 PM I may be wrong Dave but I am fairly sure that Fr Des no longer preaches on Sundays. In fact due to his political views and his wish to constantly express them I understand that he was taken out of a parish and is no longer practices as such. Posted by: Mrs Levee at September 19, 2005 11:27 PM I may be wrong Dave but I am fairly sure that Fr Des no longer preaches on Sundays. In fact due to his political views and his wish to constantly express them I understand that he was taken out of a parish and is no longer practicing as such. Posted by: Mrs Levee at September 19, 2005 11:35 PM Mr Levee Phew! one down, how many more are there like him? Posted by: Dave at September 20, 2005 12:19 AM Dave, I'm no fan of Catholicism but I'd be surprised if Fr Des' hate-filled bitter old bile is at all representative of the view of the RC church. Father Des is just an RC version of Ian Paisley. One thing he doesn't have, though, is an electoral mandate. Posted by: Comrade Stalin at September 20, 2005 12:25 AM I would be more than a little concerned about the impact the hate that is spewed-forth from Des has on those who refuse to read beyond ghentto publications. How on earth can his invective be at all helpful? Posted by: GavBelfast at September 20, 2005 12:32 AM |
