facing extradition proceedings
No, not that extradition case. This is another case. Leonard Hardy, who served 5 years in the Republic of Ireland for possession of explosives in 1990, was arrested in Spain today on a warrant issued by the authorities in Germany. According to the RTE report, he is wanted for questioning about an IRA attack on a British Army base in Osnabruck in 1989 and the attempted murder of a British Army employee.. the Belfast Telegraph also has a report.. and the BBC has Sinn Féin TD Arthur Morgan's reaction - "It is my firm view this man should be released and allowed to return home to his family in Ireland without any further delay."

..and the murder of 11 year old Alan McCrum in an IRA bombing in Banbridge in 1982....

Still, I wager one more travelling IRA terrorist suspect on his way home to the aul' sod.

I wonder if the Irish Tourist Board will be advertising the virtues of Ireland for lonely Jihad terrorists on the run and looking a safe home?

David

The reference to the IRA bombing in Banbridge is in the Belfast Telegraph report linked in the original post.

But the warrant from the German authorities will be enacted first.

Is this the gentleman so memorably portrayed in Killing Rage?

At least it gives the shinners 'free the political prisoners' department something to do.
I bet they're designing their placards and booking Catriona's tickets to Spain as we speak.

Pete,

Yes, I know it was but I just wanted to give a name to one of this alleged IRA bombers victims -a young life cruelly taken away - a family devastated by the loss of their young son. I know people who were on the scene - it was grim. I feel such sorrow for young Alan's family and such blistering contempt for the people who murdered him.

Dear David,

That was realy touching. And how clever of you to continually experience two opposing emotions at the same time. Can you play Chopsticks?

Arthur Morgan: It is my firm view this man should be released and allowed to return home to his family in Ireland without any further delay

Hmm - I don't think that Germany was a party to the Good Friday Agreement, nor to any subsequent deal concerning 'On the Runs'. That was a bit of an oversight on the part of SF's negotiationg team...

Basrney,

Pity your spelling is as poor as your sense of humanity. You REALLY should work on it - maybe when you're playing chopsticks! Try and stick to the topic.

Call me cynical, but I don't believe in coincidences. Hardy's arrest a fortnight after the emergence of the Colombian 3 is no coincidence. It's the Irish governments way of getting their own back on SF - you cause us problems, we'll cause you problems!

Yeah! that's why the Spanish authorities arrested him on the German warrant..

Sheesh.

Posted by: peteb at August 19, 2005 12:33 AM

Yes I know that it was the Spanish who arrested him because the Germans had an arrest warrant out for him. But you must be naive if you don't think the Irish government didn't tip them off. How did the authorities find out exactly where he was. Hardy obviously thought it was safe enough for him to travel to Spain otherwise he wouldn't have left Ireland.
