July 20, 2005 Testing times for MoT centres... TWO workers at a Co Antrim MoT vehicle testing centre have been suspended in a probe into "irregularities". This is not the first time I've heard of "irregularities" involving the Driver and Vehicle Testing Agency. The DVTA promises impartial testing, but with stories surfacing about the manner in which some tests have been conducted, it begins to raise questions about the agency's ability to retain public confidence. If you have an MoT horror story, publish it in the comments - but read the note at the bottom first! Recently, one motorist whose car was failed at a Co Antrim centre told me his story. After watching his own car inexplicably fail a brake test, he returned the day afterwards, without having touched the car - and it passed. There's much more to this particular story, which you might be able to read about later this week. Last year, MoT workers went on strike causing massive backlogs that led to some businesses experiencing severe financial difficulties and causing inconvenience for many drivers and workers. If consumers are not prepared to be treated shabbily any more, and DVTA staff are being suspended (and we'd all like to know why, I'm sure), then the backlash starts here: Now that evidence of less than acceptable standards is beginning to emerge, is it not time for the Government to consider privatising vehicle testing centres, as occurs in the rest of the UK? Drivers deserve a better service. NOTE: If you write about a bad experience you've had with getting your car MoT'd, please refrain from naming the testing centre or staff member, as it could leave Slugger in legal difficulties. "Now that evidence of less than acceptable standards is beginning to emerge, is it not time for the Government to consider privatising vehicle testing centres, as occurs in the rest of the UK?" Why would a private service be any more honest? Checks on Private MOT centres on the mainland have never received glowing reports either (arguably worse). It is certainly very easy to get a mainland MOT certificate on the black market. Posted by: fair_deal at July 20, 2005 06:26 PM OK, admittedly the privatisation point shouldn't have been my conclusion. That doesn't take away from the substantive point - that there's questions that keep getting raised about the standards and practices of certain NI testing centres. Posted by: Gonzo at July 20, 2005 07:04 PM I have a story that will probably be different from the rest of the horror stories that will be present on slugger. A few years back I had booked an MOT date for my ricketty Renault megane. I forgot all about it until the day of the test so got no repairs done. I decided to send it though anyway as it would give me a good list to give to my mechanic. Imagine my surprise when she sailed through with flying colours. Driving home up the road, I was pulled in by the police and givin a fine for balding tyres. As if that wasn't unbelieveable enough, as I was pulling into my driveway on my way from the altercation with the officier, the Exhaust and silencer fell of in my back yard. True to the last word. Beat that!! Posted by: ct-tyrone at July 20, 2005 08:36 PM That sounds too much like a Monty Python sketch to be true... did you beat the car with a tree branch too by any chance?! ;o) Posted by: Gonzo at July 21, 2005 04:14 AM Is this moderated Posted by: test at August 15, 2005 01:14 PM |
