July 28, 2005 Statement issued by IRA Via UTV. The statement from the Provisional Movement. In advance of the scheduled Sinn Féin press conference at 4 pm. The processing continues Update There seems to be some disagreement over what is, and what isn't, part of the statement.. the statements carried on the BBC, and on RTE, omit the final section included on UTV. Update 2 The consensus appears to be that the section causing confusion is part of the introduction to the actual text of the statement. Update - Yes again Sinn Féin, who should know, "The leadership of Óglaigh na hÉireann has formally ordered an end to the armed campaign. Update This section is included on UTV but omitted elsewhere, it appears to be part of the introduction to the actual text of the statement. Irish Republican Army orders an end to armed campaign. Pete, That is not the full statement. Posted by: crat at July 28, 2005 01:50 PM "There is a responsibility on society to ensure that there is no re-occurrence of the pogroms of 1969 and the early 1970s" - PIRA Statement Don't tell me that now even the 'RA' are calling on people to go to the RUC!! Posted by: raff at July 28, 2005 01:54 PM Mick - or anyone else - I have a Spanish journalist friend (London-based) who is on her way to Belfast to cover the story. She knows the place quite well and has written about it many times before. She would like to speak to some 'fresh faces' this time (politicians/commentators etc) especially on the Unionist side but not the 'usual supsects' - any ideas? Posted by: la Dolorosa at July 28, 2005 01:54 PM crat Is there something missing?.. the BBC version seems to be missing the last 4 sections. Posted by: peteb at July 28, 2005 01:59 PM Peteb - follow the newshound link to CNN or RTE which claims to be the full statement. Posted by: Pacman at July 28, 2005 02:05 PM The last 4 paragraphs above are an earlier part of the speech that was repeated by mistake (this was the case on the UTV site too). The full statement ended with the words "unity for the people of Ireland". I posted it at EU a while back, copied from Online.ie Posted by: beano; EverythingUlster.com at July 28, 2005 02:12 PM I've updated the original post to acknowledge the apparent disagreement on where the official statement ends.
