Paisley: actions not words...
Ian Paisley's holding statement is cold, but as yet closes no doors.

Comments (32)

A reasonable statement from Dr Paisley.

Posted by: slug at July 28, 2005 05:23 PM

In light of his sack cloth and ashes insult - I am extremely surprised and more hopeful than before.

Posted by: Snapper at July 28, 2005 05:39 PM

"A reasonable statement from Dr Paisley."

I didn't know he was a doctor. When did this happen?

Posted by: Denny Boy at July 28, 2005 06:10 PM

to paraphrase a saying

'doctor heal thyself!'

his response is predictable, if less vitriolic then expected.

Posted by: JFD at July 28, 2005 06:17 PM

There is a remarkable responence between Paisley's statement and the one made by George W Bush. Paisley will be familiar with the phrase "If you're going to sup with the devil, use a long spoon", and having worked so patiently to become the leader of unionism, I believe he won't throw it away by doing some shoddy little deal with the Provos, until they have gone through their proper decontamination period..

Posted by: Keith M at July 28, 2005 06:26 PM

Dr Paisley on the other hand is perhaps not nearly as youthful as once he was and will not want the decomtamination period to be over-over-long...

Posted by: slug at July 28, 2005 06:31 PM

You still haven't told us when he became a doctor, slug....

Posted by: Denny Boy at July 28, 2005 06:59 PM

Jerry and Martin have been making wishful noises for a long time that Big Ian didn't have long left. They'll be disappointed that he's been able to stick around long enough to see the undoing of the IRA.

Dr. Paisley can now go in the full knowledge that in the discussions at Leeds Castle he gave nothing more to republicanism, and has seen a handsome return for his stubbornness and patience.

Posted by: 6countyprod at July 28, 2005 07:07 PM

Big Ian appeared more than fresh on UTV earlier, a nice opening remark by Mike Nesbitt.."you have seen off the IRA, congratulations.."!

Posted by: Jo at July 28, 2005 07:10 PM

Now 6countyprod is at it! "Dr. Paisley"

Is there something the rest of us don't know? Next it'll be Prof Adams.

Posted by: Denny Boy at July 28, 2005 07:13 PM

Bob Jones University, which stands for the absolute authority of the bible, gave him the honorary Doctorate Denny Boy.

The school was founded in 1927 and it is at its present campus in Greenville, South Carolina since 1947.

From its 1927 founding to 1971, black people were prohibited from enrolling.

From 1971 to 1975, only unmarried black people were permitted to apply to the school until it was ruled illegal.

However, inter-racial dating was banned or membership of groups that advocate such.

Ah, so this comment by the "doctor" we can take with a grain of salt:

"We will judge the IRA’s bona fides over the next months and years based on its behaviour and activity."

Bona fides indeed!

Posted by: Denny Boy at July 28, 2005 07:27 PM

Personally I think its an insult to real doctors everywhere that this fella calls himself doctor

Posted by: wtf at July 28, 2005 07:39 PM

Denny Boy,

I'm not sure whether to take you seriously or not. There's a good fictional account over on wikipedia, but their version doesn't quite line up with some other things I have read in the past. Some say it only cost him $25, others say it was conferred on him. I suppose you just believe whichever version suits your politics. You could say it's as genuine as the ones Martin O'Neill or Bill Clinton got recently. If you need help getting one, let me know, and I'm sure we can work something out.

Posted by: 6countyprod at July 28, 2005 07:42 PM

wft

I too deeply resent the frauds who present honorary degrees as the real deal. I sweated blood when researching and writing my own doctoral thesis, as did many genuine graduates.

Perhaps a devolved government can legislate against such charlatanism ;-)

Posted by: Denny Boy at July 28, 2005 07:43 PM

That should of course have been wtf, not wft :0)

Posted by: Denny Boy at July 28, 2005 07:46 PM

Dr. Denny Boy,

Sorry for not giving you due respect before.

I've been thinking. As you seem to be qualified to do it, maybe you could check out Ian Paisley's book from 1959 called Christian Foundations, and let us know if you think it would satisfy, at least in part, the requirements of an honorary doctorate. I may be wrong, but I think it was used, along with other writings, as grounds for the honorary doctorate in 1966.

Go on, I dare you!

Posted by: 6countyprod at July 28, 2005 08:38 PM

If you're happy with such fraudulence, 6countyprod, then who am I to say you're wrong? Personally I'd be a little uneasy about being governed by a man who ascribes himself dodgy titles. That sort of thing calls to mind the worst of the African tinpot dictators.

Posted by: Denny Boy at July 28, 2005 09:13 PM

'Dr' Denny,

So, as I thought, you are all bluster. There are none so deaf as those who do not want to hear. You'll never get the full picture if you don't find out both sides of the story. I read a lot of stuff about Irish nationalism, especially books by Tim Pat Coogan. It really helps to broaden the mind. It's always good to get a different perspective on things, but sounds like you are not that way inclined.

Posted by: 6countyprod at July 28, 2005 09:47 PM

The DUP will NEVER share power with terrorists, so all you republican IRA sympathisers should give up now.

Posted by: Corgi at July 28, 2005 09:53 PM

Its actually 'NEVER..NEVER...NIVIR!'.

So expect powersharing in about 6 months then :-)

Posted by: cladycowboy at July 28, 2005 09:57 PM

6countyprod, you have no quarrel with me because you do not know who I am. So less of the personal insults, all right?

I write not about you but about a political leader who sets himself up with false credentials. Hardly a figure one can trust, and he is one who insists on others winning HIS trust.

And please don't feel obliged to address me by my title. I never use it; we bona fide doctors rarely do except in official correspondence.

Posted by: Denny Boy at July 28, 2005 10:31 PM

Denny Boy,

Just having a bit of fun. I had no intention of offending you. I know what it is to earn a BA, so I appreciate, a little, the effort you must have put into a doctorate. All the best.

Posted by: 6countyprod at July 28, 2005 10:46 PM

You're very gracious, 6countyprod! All the best to you too.

Posted by: Denny Boy at July 28, 2005 11:12 PM

6 county prod

'You could say it's as genuine as the ones Martin O'Neill or Bill Clinton got recently.'

BJU is actually a nonaccredited university. In other words they have as much authority to give out degrees as you or I do. MON and BC got their 'degrees' from 'legitimate' universities.

But then aren't all honorary degrees BS?

Looking forward to Ian Paisley condemning unionist paramilitaries for their sectarian violence in his north Antrim constituency in the past week. After that, I'm waiting for him and Peter to decommission their own arsenals and demand their supporters in the LVF and Orange Volunteers follow suit (both prosbribed anti-agreement paramilitaries professing support for the DUP).

Maybe Jeffrey Donaldson might even ask his mate Mark Harbinson- of the Stoneyford Orange Volunteers- to cease intimidating catholics from their homes in the village. Now THAT WOULD be progress......

Posted by: truth teller at July 28, 2005 11:58 PM

truth teller

Is it a case after todays statement that we can safely say
'although not all DUP voters are terrorists, all terrorists are DUP voters'? ;)

Posted by: cladycowboy at July 29, 2005 12:03 AM

I don't think republicans should be worried by any "lengthy" decontamination period. Think of it as an opportunity for Paisley to die before becoming 1st minister. That way we can write into history that it wasn't until the intransgient bigot that started the troubles back in the mid-60s died that peace could be brought to the 6 counties.

Posted by: Robert Keogh at July 29, 2005 12:15 AM

Paisley's *passing* before a settlement would of itself be the cause of a future schism - "would the Doc have approved this deal? Who understood what he really wanted, what he really would have settled for?

I expect at least 2 DUPs post-Paisley.

Posted by: Jo at July 29, 2005 10:05 AM

Robert,

More wishful thinking. His obituary should have some good final paragraphs, …leader of Unionism, …outlasted the IRA, …honorary or actual First Minister of NI, etc. Looks like he may go out in style. Quite nauseating, isn’t it?

Well, you’re just going to have to get over it, like the rest of us have to get over putting up with the Shinners.

Posted by: 6countyprod at July 29, 2005 12:45 PM

Considering it was Paisley I thought his statement was pretty generous and reasonable.

Posted by: Andrew Ian Dodge at July 30, 2005 01:02 AM

Paisley will b first minister.
But at such a price.
