In light of his sack cloth and ashes insult - I am extremely surprised and more hopeful than before.

I didn't know he was a doctor. When did this happen?

his response is predictable, if less vitriolic then expected.

There is a remarkable responence between Paisley's statement and the one made by George W Bush. Paisley will be familiar with the phrase "If you're going to sup with the devil, use a long spoon", and having worked so patiently to become the leader of unionism, I believe he won't throw it away by doing some shoddy little deal with the Provos, until they have gone through their proper decontamination period..

Dr Paisley on the other hand is perhaps not nearly as youthful as once he was and will not want the decomtamination period to be over-over-long...

You still haven't told us when he became a doctor, slug....

Jerry and Martin have been making wishful noises for a long time that Big Ian didn't have long left. They'll be disappointed that he's been able to stick around long enough to see the undoing of the IRA.

Dr. Paisley can now go in the full knowledge that in the discussions at Leeds Castle he gave nothing more to republicanism, and has seen a handsome return for his stubbornness and patience.

Big Ian appeared more than fresh on UTV earlier, a nice opening remark by Mike Nesbitt.."you have seen off the IRA, congratulations.."!

Bob Jones University, which stands for the absolute authority of the bible, gave him the honorary Doctorate Denny Boy.

The school was founded in 1927 and it is at its present campus in Greenville, South Carolina since 1947.

From its 1927 founding to 1971, black people were prohibited from enrolling.

From 1971 to 1975, only unmarried black people were permitted to apply to the school until it was ruled illegal.

However, inter-racial dating was banned or membership of groups that advocate such.

Ah, so this comment by the "doctor" we can take with a grain of salt:

I'm not sure whether to take you seriously or not. There's a good fictional account over on wikipedia, but their version doesn't quite line up with some other things I have read in the past. Some say it only cost him $25, others say it was conferred on him. I suppose you just believe whichever version suits your politics. You could say it's as genuine as the ones Martin O'Neill or Bill Clinton got recently. If you need help getting one, let me know, and I'm sure we can work something out.

I too deeply resent the frauds who present honorary degrees as the real deal. I sweated blood when researching and writing my own doctoral thesis, as did many genuine graduates.

Perhaps a devolved government can legislate against such charlatanism ;-)

I've been thinking. As you seem to be qualified to do it, maybe you could check out Ian Paisley's book from 1959 called Christian Foundations, and let us know if you think it would satisfy, at least in part, the requirements of an honorary doctorate. I may be wrong, but I think it was used, along with other writings, as grounds for the honorary doctorate in 1966.

So, as I thought, you are all bluster. There are none so deaf as those who do not want to hear. You'll never get the full picture if you don't find out both sides of the story. I read a lot of stuff about Irish nationalism, especially books by Tim Pat Coogan. It really helps to broaden the mind. It's always good to get a different perspective on things, but sounds like you are not that way inclined.

The DUP will NEVER share power with terrorists, so all you republican IRA sympathisers should give up now.

BJU is actually a nonaccredited university. In other words they have as much authority to give out degrees as you or I do. MON and BC got their 'degrees' from 'legitimate' universities.

Looking forward to Ian Paisley condemning unionist paramilitaries for their sectarian violence in his north Antrim constituency in the past week. After that, I'm waiting for him and Peter to decommission their own arsenals and demand their supporters in the LVF and Orange Volunteers follow suit (both prosbribed anti-agreement paramilitaries professing support for the DUP).

I don't think republicans should be worried by any "lengthy" decontamination period. Think of it as an opportunity for Paisley to die before becoming 1st minister. That way we can write into history that it wasn't until the intransgient bigot that started the troubles back in the mid-60s died that peace could be brought to the 6 counties.

Paisley's *passing* before a settlement would of itself be the cause of a future schism - "would the Doc have approved this deal? Who understood what he really wanted, what he really would have settled for?

I expect at least 2 DUPs post-Paisley.
