July 07, 2005 Calling all literature geeks If you have any spare change left over from the castle auction... have a browse through the amazing collection of literature [and history] up for auction at Sotheby's on 12 July, the BBC focus mostly on the WB Yeats items.. such as this album of letters and essays.. and the first edition of Ulysses from 1922.. and "To Nelly from Jim".. but there are a wide variety of lots from many writers.. Oscar Wilde, letters from TS Eliot and Dylan Thomas, Samuel Beckett.. wow.. I may be a while.. Also among the lots in the auction is a first edition of C S Lewis - The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe Posted by: peteb at July 7, 2005 08:06 PM Oh my god, I would kill for that Marvell collection for my wife. Posted by: Mr. Bingley at July 7, 2005 08:44 PM But 3000-4000 pounds is a tad over my budget. Posted by: Mr. Bingley at July 7, 2005 08:48 PM Hi Mr Bingley How about "The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark. Newly imprinted and inlarged, according to the true and perfect copy last Printed. by R. Young for John Smethwicke, 1637"? Posted by: peteb at July 7, 2005 08:50 PM Heh. The £30,000—50,000 is a tad over my budget too. Posted by: peteb at July 7, 2005 08:53 PM Yeah, sigh. She would flip for it...Marvell is her favorite poet, and her dissertation was on Milton, Marvell, and Spenser... Posted by: Mr. Bingley at July 7, 2005 09:02 PM Well there's some Milton in there too.. Posted by: peteb at July 7, 2005 09:23 PM with Chaucer thrown in. Posted by: peteb at July 7, 2005 09:25 PM Yeah, I saw that too. I was really hoping for a 1st edition Faerie Queene...which I wouldn't be able to afford either. Heh.
