June 30, 2005 Parades Commission should not be bargined for It seems that Reg Empey's declared focus on parade issues is being fought on a broader front than we are used to seeing from his party. A promising start for joined up leadership? East Belfast UUP MLA Michael Copeland has said that the future of the Parades Commission should not be used as a bargining chip in future negotiations. So the Ulster Unionists want to issue a license for the use of sectarian muscle on the streets? An early christmas for the Provos. Reckless stupidity will take political unionism to an early grave, whilst ethnic gangsterism thrives. Posted by: aquifer at June 30, 2005 10:21 AM Excellent stuff. The UUP is well known for the high profile of women in the party, it's Westminister representation is 100% female.Nobody else can say that. Care to ellucidate? Posted by: Mick at June 30, 2005 11:31 AM The parades commission was a response to a situation where the police would make decisions about parades and change them on the ground, trying to take the option that would result least public disorder on the day. This often rewarded those who threatened most, and ends up inviting opposite sides to bring the maximum force to bear. I don't feel a need to go back to that.
