Order restored..?
WHAT'S this? An outbreak of peace, love and understanding just as you were thinking the marching season was about to degenerate into another sectarian slugfest? Could the apparently groundbreaking deal between the Bogside Residents and Orange Order in Derry be a model for other disputed parades? Ulster Unionist and community relations activist Trevor Ringland thinks it could be; Sinn Fein representative and Garvaghy Road Residents spokesman Brendan MacCionnaith says no, you can't compare Derry and the Garvaghy Road.

And without face-to-face meetings? That couldn't possibly have anything to do with SF's Brendan MacCionnaith's response?

This lack of face to face meetings in Derry is a myth, the BRG and the CoC are not making an issue of it in order to save the deal and offer the Orange Order in Derry the fig leaf of complying with Grand Lodge policy. In reality these negotiations, of course, involved face to face meetings albiet speaking through a chairperson. The individuals involved from the Orange Order are more or less the same individuals who negotiate face to face on behalf of the Apprentice Boys, therefore the nonsense and contradictions become even more stark. Behind closed doors, who is to say and if you listen to the media coverage today all sides are being very careful with their language.

Well done BRG, well done Derry OO. Is this the format ahead for SF, DUP negotiations?

JD

Sinn Fein and the DUP have been speaking through the chairs of councils and committees for decades.

On one occasion, the Chairman of the Assembly Agriculture Committee (better known as a Mr Paisley) directly addressed a committee member of Sinn Fein's.

But he doesn't like to talk about it.

You have to love it. If i sit in a room, or maybe they were standing in it, with some other people, and we are all there to talk about a specific issue, we don't have to talk directly to each other to communicate. Brillant.

Derry and commonsense 1, Grand Lodge of Ireland 0.

So there might be a dejá vu ahead in days to come. He won’t like it though and maybe he won’t go for it anyway.
Even with a vivid imagination, a respond from an extraterrestrial civilisation seems less out of this world then Ian Paisley publicly talking to Sinn Fein.
But perhaps old dogs can be taught new tricks. It remains to see what will be stronger inside him.

Without doubt. Dont forget that two of the main actors in the Derry talks are members of SF anf the DUP. Willie Hay and Donncha MacNiallais have been very strong in leading this process for a number of years now.

"Derry and commonsense 1, Grand Lodge of Ireland 0."

I certainly wouldnt characterise it like that. I think there's no doubt that commonsense won through.

So its common sense:1, Orangemen:1, Anti-Parades Agenda:0

Well it good to see my countrymen getting along, but the SF councillor is actually correct, Derry is'nt Garvaghy, perhaps cause his lads are there, or perhaps there is no Lodge members who live in the locality, and it can be viewed as some sort of triumphalist march(which it is), forced down the throats of Roman Catholics(what ever political viewpoint they have), would the Combat 18 be allowed march in Brixton?
Also the user of The Grand Lodge of Ireland was misplaced earlier, as dispite popular belief Freemasonry in the south has quite a few Republican devotees, and there is a reasonable theorey that the United Irish men formed through it, as well as the help it gave to Catholic Emancipation. It's the Grand Orange Lodge.
