June 06, 2005 Asda wades into NI supermarket battle The Guardian reports that the second-biggest UK supermarket chain Asda, owned by US retail giant Wal-Mart, has agreed to buy 12 Safeway stores in Northern Ireland from WM Morrison for £73.6million - bringing Asda into direct competition here with current retail-sector leader Tesco. The 12 stores are at Ballyclare, Bangor, Coleraine, Cookstown, Dundonald, Enniskillen, Kilkeel, Newtonards, Omagh, Strabane and Shore Road and Westwood in Belfast. The standard statements have been made, Sounds good. Safeway haven't been a real player in the market here for ages (if they ever were?) Posted by: beano; EverythingUlster.com at June 6, 2005 12:27 PM I'm a bit saddened by this, but only because Morrison's own brand printer cartridges are the cheapest for my printer that I have as yet found! Posted by: Alan at June 6, 2005 12:58 PM There's a real danger of a cut-throat battle for customers in some of those towns.. with the casualties being smaller locally owned stores.. Cookstown in particular has a large Tesco store, recently opened.. and it's debatable whether both large stores can thrive there. Posted by: peteb at June 6, 2005 01:08 PM pete You'll love this!
