Waiting and waiting...
Blair looks to be back with a reduced majority. But in Northern Ireland everyone is sitting on their hands waiting for the real count to begin. At the moment inside they are going through the local government boxes, to make sure that none of the Westminster slips have gone in there by mistake. As one insider told Slugger, "it's always tempting to go outside City Hall, stand close to group of journalists and talk loudly into your mobile phone and say, 'Yes I know, I can't believe it myself we're about 6% ahead'"! Oh ennui of democracy!

I wish it would hurry up!
by the way which is the best website to get real life updates on count figures and the like...other than slugger that is ;)
Roll on 2pm we should be hearing a bit more by that time!
Cannot wait to see the DUP procession outside city hall!

In the rest of the UK they did NOT 'go through' the local ballot to check that there were no westminster ballots there.

I do think that NI has shown itself backward, delaying the count till the morning, and acting in this highly sluggish fashion.

Poor show.

Kicks off with Talkback at 12 - can't wait either. If I wasn't desk-bound I'd love to pop over to Banbridge to wave "Bye, Bye" to David Trimble.

"In the rest of the UK they did NOT 'go through' the local ballot to check that there were no westminster ballots there."

slug9987, there wasn't any Council elections in GB but I agree that NI should have been counting last night. Then again, we'll get more coverage on National News today/tonight.

"there wasn't any Council elections in GB"

There were.

Posted by: slug9987 at May 6, 2005 11:01 AM

The reason we seem to need to go through the council boxes for Westminister slips is because of the setup in places like that in my local polling station where there was no indication where to put which ballot paper showing just how badly organised the election was in some rural areas

Has anyone else been getting a lot of spam from posting on this website?

Posted by: David at May 6, 2005 11:04 AM

More NI incompetence: I read on the BBC that people in Newry were queueing up for 60 minutes to vote.

Extremely backward.

Posted by: slug9987 at May 6, 2005 11:06 AM

How do you mean David ?
What makes you think that spam has anything to do with being here ?

Posted by: Davros at May 6, 2005 11:08 AM

"Police said polling day in Londonderry passed off peacefully for the first time in 30 years. "

Wonders never cease.

Meanwhile in the 21st century...

Davros, people (mostly nerds like myself) sometimes do what I've done and set up a domain name and register with a different name for every website eg slugger@domainname.com, amazon@domainname.com so that they know where any spam comes from. Of course EU won't display your email address on the page.

Best way round it is if you put a website URL in the box it will link to the URL instead of your email address which will be hidden, even if you just put in sluggerotoole.com - or EverythingUlster.com - go on ;)

Sorry I know that's away OT but I'm trying to distract myself til the results start coming in.

Too complicated for a simple country lad like me Beano. On/off is the height of my nerdery ;)
finding the time dragging before the count ?
He he he - we pipe smokers have the last laugh!

Posted by: Davros at May 6, 2005 11:25 AM

I have to agree with annoyance over how slow the count is here - there really is no excuse. There were lcal elections in London, too - all of the seats there were declared before dawn.

What a contrast between here and Sunderland South.

Is the slowness to suit the broadcasters for set-pieces, just traditional, or just sluggish incompetence?

TalkBack, etc, should be challenging the Chief Electoral Officer and his colleagues about this shambles.

Posted by: GavBelfast at May 6, 2005 11:26 AM

I don't see what all the fuss is about to be honest.
We'll know soon enough.

Posted by: Davros at May 6, 2005 11:28 AM

Gav - I put it down to a cultural willingness to be slow and second best.

Posted by: slug9987 at May 6, 2005 11:36 AM

But Ulster people are notoriously impatient in other ways!

If it was a PR election, I could understand, but the sluggishness is woeful (I'm not particularly annoyed about it, and of course there are more important things in the world, but that doesn't mean it isn't woeful!).

Posted by: GavBelfast at May 6, 2005 12:21 PM

I like the delay. It means that we don't have to stay up all night if we want the excitement of watching each result come in one by one.

Posted by: Occasional Commenter at May 6, 2005 01:34 PM

Some of the boxes still haven't been opened in some places.

Incredible!!!

Posted by: GavBelfast at May 6, 2005 02:36 PM

Surely the real reason they don't count on thursday night is that none of them would get on TV if they did?

Posted by: Rob at May 6, 2005 04:12 PM

Davros sorry I am just getting back to you now i was just wondering if anyone else was having spam problems after posting here. Myself and a friend recieved the exact same spam 24hours after first posting on this site and we are convinced (after we researched where the spam came from, I write email software so I know a few ways of finding where my email address was garnered from) that it is because of our posts here wondering if anyone else had the same problems. Not blaming slugger I was just wondering because of my line of work
