May 25, 2005 O'Neill quits as manager of Celtic Martin O'Neill will quit as manager of Celtic for personal reasons after this weekend's Scottish Cup final against Dundee United. I think it's safe to say O'Neill is a person who by his actions and achievements as a player and manager has won the respect of virtually everyone on these islands, regardless of background, and our thoughts go to his wife Geraldine, who is battling cancer. Well said George. At the end of the day, it's only a game and sometime you have to put the important things in life first. I hope Martin's wife makes a full recovery and whenever Martin does decide to go back into management I'm sure he'll be just as successfull. Posted by: PS at May 25, 2005 05:09 PM Martin o`neill is a fine man, great manager, and captain of our wee country, truly a good man. Posted by: neill armstrong at May 25, 2005 05:39 PM Sad to see him leave Celtic and hopefully Geraldine will win her battle. Should be a tearful day at Hampden Park on Saturday Posted by: JK at May 25, 2005 06:59 PM I have very little time for the idotic scottish league. However I have a lot of respect for Martin O'neill as a player, manager and person he has proven his ability in each and I wish him and his wife well in their challenges ahead. Posted by: Roger at May 25, 2005 07:02 PM A courageous decision by a courageous man, and of course a great manager. A lot of people in families faced with cancer will be inspired by this example. Posted by: IJP at May 25, 2005 07:13 PM It's all been said and well said. I just want to add my good wishes to the pot. Posted by: bertie at May 25, 2005 08:33 PM Best wishes to Martin and Geraldine. Posted by: RedPaul at May 25, 2005 09:31 PM I was an acoylte to the mecca of Filbert Street for most of the early 90s, and MON was, and still is, a hero round that way. A fine man, all our prayers go to him and his family in Kilrea. Posted by: Stray Toaster at May 25, 2005 10:22 PM Roger- idiotic Scottish league? Explain yourself please. Posted by: Fitba fan at May 26, 2005 09:21 AM being a massive Rangers fan O'Neills departure was great news but for sad reasons. I dont think he'll be back at celtic.
