Intimidation behind campaign poster veto

Human Rights poster 'banned'
Independent Human Rights candidate in West Belfast Liam Kennedy's campaign posters have been vetoed by the advertising company on whose billboards the posters were due to appear - despite the image being used previously by the NIO and being cleared for use on his campaign's postal communication. A spokesman for JC Decaux, said: "While the company fully understands that the posters in question relate to human rights, on reviewing the images we felt that they were inappropriate and could cause offence." However, Lee McFaul, a sales agent for Clear Channel, an American advertising company which also owns advertising hoardings in Belfast, was more direct - "The poster caused us concern as it could have provoked certain people who did not agree with its message to damage the billboards where the poster was displayed"[emphasis added]

Clear Channel???Aren't they that right wing, Bush loving, religious fanatic pleasing, animal abuser groups from the United States?
Makes sense they might object to anything relating to human rights. There could be a whole other story here of one was interested enough to look into it!

Clear Channel were the second company approached and asked to display the posters.

As the article makes clear, JC Decaux had agreed a contract to display posters at two sites in West Belfast.

In todays Sindo, intellectual heavyweight and great espouser of all things Eoghan Harris, the man himself has thrown his considerable influence behind Kennedy. No doubt now that the Kennedy vote will rocket into three figures.

In todays Sindo

What were you doing reading the Sindo Pat ? ;)

I admit it Davros and have now been effectively outed.

LOL Pat - now I'm waiting for David V to admit being an avid fan of AP/RN!

LOL, I only read it to keep up to date on just how bad elements of the media can be. For instance one of the Sindos political heavyweights Joseph O'Connor, commenting on the SDLP - Shinner battle stated, 'the SDLP's Alistair McDonald is seen as a serious challenger in East Belfast.'

Pat,
Kennedy got 102 votes when he ran against Adams in the 1997 Westminster election so he has already got a three-figure vote. For reasons best known to him, Eoghan Harris failed to mention this fact in the article.

Harris calling every northern and southern nationalist who votes Sinn Fein a "delinquent" doesn't help, nor does his falling to Godwin's law for the umpteenth time.

Doesn't he realise that many of the people who vote Sinn Fein in the Irish Republic never voted before and live in areas that would be tarred on an almost daily basis as "delinquent" by many middle class Irish? It's probably the same up north.

Hell, sure half of them would love to introduce anti-social behaviour orders for them in the misguided belief that it's alright for the people to live in poverty but it certainly isn't alright for them to lose faith in the society that is treating them so badly.

If anything, he is giving these people a closer affinity with Sinn Fein but then again how would he know how the people in places like the sprawling estates of West Dublin feel.

But then in his defence, I suppose it's a step lower than the Sunday Times' use of "evil".
