Champions League kickoff approaches
A thread in deference to all those who want to vent their spleen on whether Liverpool beat AC Milan or not in the Champions League final in Istanbul tonight and who don't have the cúpla focal.

Although the furthest thing from a Liverpool fan, Rafael Benitez is a top man in my view, especially for humbling Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho with his tactical nous in the semi-finals, so I'll not be too upset if the Reds claim a fifth European Champions trophy. So far, everyone is well behaved in Istanbul and there's a party atmosphere.

The Reds have a really good chance - providing we turn up of course.

Posted by: Logybird at May 25, 2005 05:52 PM

The Boys need to die for the shirt tonight, if they do like legends of old, they will be unstoppable. I think they will do it.

Here is some inspiration from past masters:

Come on you Mighty Reds

Posted by: PaddyCanuck at May 25, 2005 06:00 PM

Liverpool will lose and I am going to piss myself laughing ;)

Come on AC!!!

Posted by: Chris Gaskin at May 25, 2005 06:03 PM

C'mon Milan, stick it to 'em!!!

Posted by: maca at May 25, 2005 06:10 PM

Victory is ours tonight the mighty reds will squash AC into the ground :)

Posted by: neill armstrong at May 25, 2005 06:12 PM

Come on LIVERPOOL.

Posted by: Roger at May 25, 2005 06:20 PM

FORZA MILANO!

Sorry, just had to get that out of my system.

Posted by: Paul at May 25, 2005 06:38 PM

Soccer, well, I guess I'll be watching. But, in this house it's all about Bo and American Idol.

Posted by: Eagle at May 25, 2005 06:42 PM

I'm an Arsenal man, but I've never forgotten the astonishing reception from the Kop for my team in 1989 (16 years ago tomorrow in fact), and those same fans deserve to be celebrating tonight.

But I've a feeling Milan will nick it, unfortunately.

(btw Paul - they're called 'Milan', even in Italian.)

Posted by: IJP at May 25, 2005 07:16 PM

The Pool Rule.

AC Milan will underestimate us and that will be the downfall.

Its coming home the cup is coming home.

Posted by: fair_deal at May 25, 2005 07:19 PM

IJP ... Forza Milano ... that'd be the grammar ya see ;)

Posted by: maca at May 25, 2005 07:19 PM

IJP

Liverpool fans are well known for their passion and generosity towards rivals.

Fair_deal I see this is another issue we agree on.

Posted by: Roger at May 25, 2005 07:21 PM

PAOLO MALDIIIIINI!

Posted by: maca at May 25, 2005 07:48 PM

I'm an Arsenal man

Feet of clay Ian....have you David Ford's e mail address ?

Come on you Spurs!

Posted by: Davros at May 25, 2005 07:50 PM

3-0 at half time?

Yis are screwed!

Posted by: Gonzo at May 25, 2005 08:45 PM

Men against boys out there tonight

All Liverpool can hope for is Milan taking their foot right off and settling for 3 - 0.

Posted by: JK at May 25, 2005 08:47 PM

Roger

Liverpool fans are well known for their passion and generosity towards rivals.

And also their knowledge of the game.

It was much appreciated that night, which is why I'm gutted they're getting a bit of a lesson tonight.

Let's just hope it doesn't get too heavy and remember even the mighty Barca at the top of its game was on the end of a Milan masterclass one year.

Davros

I was aware of your preference. Astounded such a discerning person would make such a rash choice of team... :)

Posted by: IJP at May 25, 2005 08:53 PM

Lesson ?

It's 3-2, Milan under the cosh.....

Posted by: George at May 25, 2005 09:02 PM

LOL

3-0

HA, HA

All the dirty scallies, there is only red army ;)

To adopt an english soccer phrase

You're not singing, you're not singing, you're not singing anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Chris Gaskin at May 25, 2005 09:02 PM

Chris,
a bit early on the gloating there.

It's 3-3 now. Penalty converted by Alonso after Gerrard fell like a ton of bricks.

Posted by: George at May 25, 2005 09:04 PM

If the pool win they have me to thank, I had to anger the gods ;)

Posted by: Chris Gaskin at May 25, 2005 09:05 PM

Not a bad comeback :)

Posted by: JK at May 25, 2005 09:06 PM

I know George ;)

(sent to the corner for 15 mins)

Posted by: Chris Gaskin at May 25, 2005 09:07 PM

George

They did receive a lesson in the first half - but boy do they appear to have learned it!!!

Great stuff!

Posted by: IJP at May 25, 2005 09:11 PM

Two great teams.

Posted by: Davros at May 25, 2005 09:14 PM

Hmmm, actually Davros there's one good team and one great team with a capacity for self-destruction (like against Depor last season).

I'm a bit concerned the momentum wasn't retained...

Posted by: IJP at May 25, 2005 09:16 PM

merely lulling those slick passsing Italians into a false sense of security IJP.

Posted by: George at May 25, 2005 09:28 PM

DOH! I meant to write Two great clubs Ian!

Posted by: Davros at May 25, 2005 09:35 PM

Mick

I take it that this is discussing something serious (football) as apart from frivolity (politics) that the man not ball rule doesn't apply ;-))))))

Posted by: fair_deal at May 25, 2005 09:41 PM

Good point George. I mean, the same trick nearly paid off at Highbury a couple of weeks back! Gotta hand it to you, you had everyone except Cesc Fabregas fooled! :))

Davros

That is certainly true. Sadly they are both greater than mine, although we'll get there in the end...!

fair_deal

It does apply, except the suspension is in games, not weeks...

Posted by: IJP at May 25, 2005 09:44 PM

Liverpool looking tired, obviously hanging on in the hope that Jerzey Dudek (aka the Czech Cat) can win them the trophy in the penalty shootout......

Posted by: George at May 25, 2005 10:08 PM

Am I imagining things or did Dudek just pull off the two most astonishing point-blank saves I've ever seen???

Posted by: George at May 25, 2005 10:12 PM

George

Dudek is Polish

Posted by: fair_deal at May 25, 2005 10:27 PM

YE- F******-HA

Roger, Maca, Paddy Canuck let the Manure baiting begin

Posted by: fair_deal at May 25, 2005 10:30 PM

Indeed he is, don't know what I was thinking apologies in all the excitement I'm losing my mind.

Chris, God has smited you.

3-2 Liverpool on penalties

Posted by: George at May 25, 2005 10:31 PM

The football gods HAVE spoken. There are only one MIGHTY REDS - L - I - V - E - R - P - O - O - L.

Posted by: fair_deal at May 25, 2005 10:33 PM

The omens were right.

1. When Liverpool wear red and the opponents white Liverpool win.
2. In the year Prince Charles plus Ken and Deirdre get married and a pope dies Liverpool win.

Shove your La predictions up your ...........

Posted by: fair_deal at May 25, 2005 10:36 PM

Has to be one of the great comebacks !
( and a dig in the guts to those who criticised the Liverpool manager for saying he hadn't had the team practising penalty out-shoots as they couldn't replicate the stress involved )

Posted by: Davros at May 25, 2005 10:49 PM

Thoroughly undeserved I have to say. L'pool played well for 6 minutes, got three goals and sat on their arses for the next 60 minutes. But such is football, the shite teams win sometimes.

Posted by: maca at May 25, 2005 10:49 PM

"Chris, God has smited you."

Indeed he has like on so many other occasions ;)

Fantastic match, well deserved win

Liverpool deserved the win, the played out of their skins

Posted by: Chris Gaskin at May 25, 2005 10:50 PM

Wonderful effort by Liverpool, absolutely delighted for those gracious fans - 16 years on I say, you deserved it!!!

Good news for the English League too.

Posted by: IJP at May 25, 2005 10:54 PM

Alex ferguson had 20 years and could not overtake liverpool!

WE ARE BACK ON TOP!

Manure fans can you count to 5?

We are the greatest football club!!!

Bo on the pool!

CHAMPIONES! CHAMPIONES!

Posted by: fair_deal at May 25, 2005 10:57 PM

Anyone who recorded the match could you get in touch. I need twenty copies. I want to send them to Old Trafford to show them how you win with penalty kicks. PICK IT OUT DIDA.

Posted by: fair_deal at May 25, 2005 11:01 PM

Paddy, how many premierships did liverpool win? Can you count to zero? ;)

Posted by: maca at May 25, 2005 11:02 PM

My good nature is begining to unravel

Good win but koppers need to relax

Posted by: Chris Gaskin at May 25, 2005 11:03 PM

Are our man U fans beginning to see red?

Get used to it now Glazer is in charge, £300million in the red.

God bless him.

Posted by: fair_deal at May 25, 2005 11:12 PM

I want to send them to Old Trafford to show them how you win with penalty kicks.

You wouldn't beat us though...!!! :)

Posted by: IJP at May 25, 2005 11:14 PM

Liverpool fans seem to be getting on the high horse very quickly alright. My benevolent neutrality is being sorely tested.

And what have Manchester United to do with this?

Take a leaf out of Mr. Benitez's book and show some class.....

Posted by: George at May 25, 2005 11:22 PM

Maca and CG started it so they did ;-)))))

Perspective is for tomorrow. Tonight we drink from the cup of glory, THE EUROPEAN CUP.

Posted by: fair_deal at May 25, 2005 11:32 PM

Chris I intneded to come on here and slate you but you have been so humble and gracious in defeat I wont bother.

I thought the match was excellent and great for the game, great entertainment.

Liverpool had a rather waek side with Dudek fumbling frequently although his save on 47 minutes changed the match and late in extra time was unbelieveable and his penalty saves were brilliant although I feel he still has to go. Its hard to say anything good about Traore, Baros and Kewell.

Carragher, Gerrard and Garcia were magnificent what a brillaint game and win.

Posted by: Roger at May 26, 2005 12:55 AM

Liverpool were indeed great and I'm pleased that Ireland's own Steve Finnan picked up a Champions League winner's medal.

Posted by: Young Irelander at May 26, 2005 02:39 AM

Roger

Baros was just ok rather than bad. The number of times Milan came down that side shows how weak they knew Traore was and proved to be (although he saved us with that goal-line clearance). Kewell should bounce twice as he is thrown out of Anfield.

Posted by: fair_deal at May 26, 2005 09:46 AM

Have to agree about Kewell.

The man who was too scared of Ferguson to join Man Utd shouldn't have been allowed to even touch the trophy last night. Injured or not, he has shown no effort or application since he joined Liverpool. Another one of Houllier's expensive flops.

Well done Liverpool (although it should have been Chelsea in the final... ;-) )

Mind you, that boy Cisse needs a severe talking to about his stupid hair.

Rafa be thy name.

I'll bet Michael Owen feels like a right plonker!

He leaves Liverpool cause he wants to win silverware, as their not up to the job, (supposedly).

Who's sorry now Michael?

Posted by: The Gent. at May 26, 2005 12:30 PM

Actually, Michael Owen wanted to stay. Benitez sold him.

Posted by: Logybird at May 26, 2005 12:36 PM

Owen wanted to go and did over his mate Gerrard in the process

Posted by: fair_deal at May 26, 2005 12:48 PM

Congratulations to the 5th best team in England.

Posted by: Keith M at May 26, 2005 01:16 PM

No.1 team in Europe. The champions of the Champions.

Posted by: fair_deal at May 26, 2005 03:36 PM

"The champions of the Champions"

Err, don't you have to be domestic league 'Champions' to technically become the champions of the Champions?

Congrats anyway - i think this proves that A. Ferguson isn't as great as everyone thinks.

Posted by: Cahal at May 26, 2005 04:47 PM

cahal

it is the 'Champions league' hence champions of the champions

Posted by: fair_deal at May 26, 2005 04:53 PM

Maca,

With regards o your jibe about the premiership, we one the league championship 18 times. Same country, same teams, same game... Alex had 20 years he could not catch us.

The Mighty Reds are Kings of Europe again! We will go on from here to dominate England and Europe, with Benitez and Gerrard, are rise will be unstoppable....

Meanwhile in Manc land, Manure will decline, Alex will be unreplaceable, and Glazer will take united the way of Leeds....

Go on the Pool!!!

Posted by: PaddyCanuck at May 27, 2005 05:25 PM

With a bit of luck they'll head off to Canada so as to please their fervently anglophile Canadian fans...
