Bertie's full of "hope"..
Speaking at University College, Dublin a couple of days ago, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, seemingly ignoring history, had this to say on awaiting the result of the internal consultation of the Provisional Movement - "I hope it is positive, I hope it is conclusive and I hope there is no ambiguity about it". Hmmm.. Bertie still seems to think there will be a point when, as Seamus Heaney put it, "hope and history rhyme"..

Should the ira continue with its terrorists campaign or not.

There must be some sole searching going on.

"Should the ira continue with its terrorists campaign or not.?"

Rodger,

The IRA will always continue with its terrorists (threat of violence with their hidden arms dumps) and their ongoing criminality as long as there is weak leaders in the UK & the ROI who dont have the balls to take them out.

FORMER Royal Irish Regiment Colonel Tim Collins launched an attack on the left and the Labour leadership yesterday for its weak stance against the men of terror.

The east Belfast soldier, who rose to fame after his speech to his troops on the eve of the Iraq war, condemned the " insipidness of recent Secretaries of State" and "IRA apologists"

I know the Tories are not in power, but many of them, sympatetic to NI and strongly anti-terrorists have felt themselves hampered by the UUP's support for concessions. They have not wanted to take a stronger line than the largest unionist party (not a valid excuse IMO).

Although sympathy with the unionist and more specifically anti-terrorist cause is less widespread in the Labour party, particularly in the goverment, it has been much easier for them to be soft on terrorism.

Members such as Kate Hoey in the Labour party are no fans of Sinn Fein and I think Brown might adopt a stronger line than Blair did.

"with DT's willingness to go along with concessions" should have been the end of my last sentence.

Roger,

I agree and there are others like Kate, unfortuntely she's not in the government. Does anyone know what Brown's real position is?

"Members such as Kate Hoey in the Labour party are no fans of Sinn Fein"

In her student days Kate Hoey was one of the students who helped stage a campaign against the UK conservative government by carrying a dummy coffin into Downing Street in support for republicanism after bloody sunday. It was her support for Sinn Fein, socialism and neo marxism that helped her climb to success in the British Labour party.

She has changed a lot since those days.

"She has changed a lot since those days."

Yes, she now seems to support the DUP

"FORMER Royal Irish Regiment Colonel Tim Collins"

The regiment formally known as the UDR/UDA which was the British state's way of arming and training Loyalist terrorists. That's before they thought up the brilliant idea of just directly colluding with them.

Kate Hoey is on record as saying she is not specifically endorsing the DUP. She did give Arlene her personnal endorsment (and would have if she had been standind as a UUP candidate). When she did so she urged the UUP not to stand against her and for the DUP to stand down in South Belfast. I think that the first steps of the UUPs rehabilitation (if it is ever to happen) has to include an apology to the unionist electorate in both constituencies for not accepting the DUP offer, (which was actually even more generous than Kate's proposal, in that it would have let the UUP choose which constituency they wanted).

Getting back to the origonal thread, whatever any IRA/SF statement actually says, I hope we are all stockpiling the salt with which to take it.
