April 04, 2005 Sinn Fein take Donegal seat on the Udaras Probably the most remarkable thing about the elections to Udaras na Gaeltachta was the election of Gráinne Mhic Géidigh of Sinn Fein to the board. She's a fine looking woman! Posted by: Davros at April 4, 2005 03:17 PM Am I that shallow ? You bet, and honest to boot LOL Posted by: Davros at April 4, 2005 03:19 PM One seat out of 17 in what should be SF/IRA heartland. I think it a bit of a stretch of the word "remarkable". Posted by: Keith M at April 4, 2005 06:57 PM Multiplying the vote by seven times from 1% to 7% in only five years. You are quite right Keith, remarkable is an excellent description. Posted by: PS at April 4, 2005 07:45 PM PS, how many candidates last time and how many this time? I mean if the SF result in the Meath bi-election result is being spun as a "success" then I fear there isn't a straw that remains unclutched. Posted by: Keith M at April 4, 2005 08:29 PM 7% for SF in Donegal is certainly remarkable. Posted by: Jimmy Sands at April 4, 2005 08:32 PM I mean if the SF result in the Meath bi-election result is being spun as a "success" It was a success, the Sinn Féin percentage of the vote went up. When this happens for a party, they can judge the election a success, how great a success will depend on the circumstances. Jimmy 7% is throughout all the Gaeltachts. SF only stood in 3 of them. Not sure what the exact percentage in Donegal was. Posted by: PS at April 4, 2005 10:19 PM Where does the 7% figure come from? Any unspun numbers available? Posted by: Jimmy Sands at April 4, 2005 10:37 PM 7% comes from TG4 nuacht last night. It's not spun, it's simply the percentage of the total vote gained by Sinn Féin. Sorry Jimmy did you want me add on all the people who visited the Gaeltacht last summer as part of the electorate who didn't vote SF and take away all the voters who only voted SF because Gerry appears to them through dream propaganda? Posted by: PS at April 4, 2005 10:43 PM I merely asked PS. It's a fairly meaningless statistic on its own. All I know is that a shinner replaced a blaneyite. Hardly a sea change.
