This is the first I've seen of this but I predict no charges will arise out of this. There's a by-election in Meath tomorrow and this reminds me of the arrest of Martin Ferris before the last election.

That's true Henry. If, however, charges and convictions follow it's bad news for SF.

Davros,

Correct Henry, no doubt local Gardai were on the phone to HQ and urged to hod fire until today. Although those arrested can only be held for 12 hrs one suspects they will be held long enough to carry over to election day.

Even if true is there anything wrong with confronting drug dealers. Has dealing and the like not increased simply because the cops turn a blind eye and communities follow suit.

Pat,

"Is there anything wrong with confronting drug dealers?"

That's an interesting departure for discussion.

'Even if true ....'

Come on it's quiet in here.

Posted by: Pat Mc Larnon [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 10, 2005 01:13 PM

Henry, are you suggesting that the Gardai turn a blind eye to criminality in the run up to an election?

Pat McL " is there anything wrong with confronting drug dealers". There is if you say you are from the IRA which still threatens to kill people at the drop of a hat. There is a perfectly good police force in this country which has an excellent record on tackling drug related crime. If these people were genuinely concerned all they had to do was pick up a phone.

Got one.

I know it is a lot to ask of RTE but does anyone know if the drug dealers were arrested?

Posted by: Belfastwhite [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 10, 2005 02:03 PM

does anyone know if the drug dealers were arrested?

The RTE report says that two people were acccused of being drug dealers and were threatened .... should the Gardai arrest people accused by republicans ?

Posted by: Davros [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 10, 2005 02:07 PM

Lets get real how many times have we seen this type of political intervention prior to elections my bet all released without charge and very little reporting of the fact.

Posted by: J Kelly [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 10, 2005 02:10 PM

'should the Gardai arrest people accused by republicans ?'

Yes, why not?

A couple of pairs of shoes and Xmas presents were arrested and apparently that proved IRA involvement in the Northern. Lets be consistent.

Maybe it's just paranoia that makes you think this is all a big conspiracy but maybe you're right and maybe it's the current thirst for SF blood in the media that made RTE report a bit of a non-story or maybe it's true.

Just have to wait and see.

"...very little reporting of the fact".

Mmmm. What constitutes 'fact'? What weight of proof do people require before they will believe in certain 'facts'? Does that weighting change from player to player? Or even, do 'facts' change depending on what 'angle'you look at them from?

Jesus Mick that was deep.

As with Cork releases have followed. Is it not time the script was changed?

Keith
"There is a perfectly good police force in this country which has an excellent record on tackling drug related crime."

No there isn't and no they don't, in my opinion. There's a serious drug problem in this country (one of the highest levels of drug-related deaths in Europe) and a hell of a lot more needs to be done to tackle it.
Who are the biggest killers, drug dealers or the IRA?
I'm not too bothered if the IRA put the squeeze on drug dealers (as long as they are not just wiping out the competition of course)

"I'm not too bothered if the IRA put the squeeze on drug dealers (as long as they are not just wiping out the competition of course)"

The problem with that is that once a system of tithing is established it suits those taxing the dealers for the dealers to prosper.

No such tithes exist. Go bark up another tree Trevalyan.

Davros

The IRA don't tithe drug dealers

Dav
"The problem with that is that once a system of tithing is established it suits those taxing the dealers for the dealers to prosper."

Of course. Though i'm not talking about allowing any kind of system to develop. I only mean in individual cases like these I won't lose any sleep over it. Ideally we'd be in a situation where we'd have a police force with the training, experience and resources to tackle such crime, we don't have that.

PC - lay off the insults.

The PSNI\RUC do though, you give us info, we will turn a blind eye....

Posted by: PaddyCanuck [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 10, 2005 10:11 PM

cg - so they claim. I suspect they do.

Posted by: Davros [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 10, 2005 10:13 PM

Davros, you know millions fled Ireland because they could not stop breeding like rabbits, what you suspect does not hold much water...

Posted by: PaddyCanuck [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 10, 2005 10:16 PM

“cg - so they claim. I suspect they do.”

Any evidence Davros?

Questions need to be asked of the RUC/PSNI though

Take Newry, everyone knew speedy was a drug dealer but was he ever arrested, no he wasn't

If anyone is getting tithes then it is the cops.
