Road Bowls big in the US
Road Bowls. If you've never seen it, you've got to try it once. It's a damn sight more difficult that you'd imagine it is. Flinging heavey shot up a country road. I had the pleasure of accompanying a group of Corkmen up a half mile course a few years back. Never seen a group of septugenarians jump so high and so calmly. Apparently, it's now getting big in Virginia!

Use to see it played round Keady when I was a kid.
Great tradition, I hope it survives and prospers.

WEST VIRGINIA!! Jeez Mick! Given all the difficulties over the Ireland vs Northern Ireland debate that sometimes rears it's head on this site, I thought you'd be just a bit more sensitive to the non-secessionist West Virginians' cause.

:-)

I have spent time in both West Virginia and Northern Ireland. I will admit to having been afraid for my life in both places. I will also note that my last visit to Northern Ireland was in 1958.

May I just point out how ludicrous it is for those who insisted on maintaining the Union to call their illegitimate statelet 'West Virginia'. As any map will show, the Commonwealth of Virginia actually sticks out farther to the west than does 'West Virginia'. QED, so.

Once had a Bowl roll gently towards me, and I innocently placed my fingers underneath to scoop it up... Lucky not to lose have my fingers. As it happened only one nail fell out. Ooouchh! Live and learn.

'As any map will show, the Commonwealth of Virginia actually sticks out farther to the west than does 'West Virginia'. QED, so.'

Ever wonder how Northern Ireland can lay claim to its title? ;-)

'Ever wonder how Northern Ireland can lay claim to its title?'

Why, no, the thought had never occurred to me.

But, now that you mention it, I agree: pointing out that Malin Head is more northerly than any part of NI is every bit as devastating an argument against partition as pointing out that Lower Possum Gizzard, Virginia lies to the west of the westernmost tip of West Virginia was an argument in favour of the Confederacy.

There's a road bowls tournament(?) festival(?) sometime soon in Armagh.

Is this daft game not of French origin actually?

Try this link for some history. It might have a link to William Prince of Orange. It was called "Bullets " round where I lived as a child.

Didn't know you were brought up round Keady Davros.

Bullets is still played in a few places in Armagh. On the outskirts of Armagh City, it's played on the Rock Road and the Navan Fort Road, and up near Keady they still play it out around Carnagh.

They should get the three areas together and hold the World Championship!

SJ - Lived close to the area for as couple of years :)
Great part of the world.
