King turns on Sinn Fein?
Daithi (the shameless agitator) in New York on one of Sinn Fein's most erstwhile supporters in the US who is falling in behind his president in giving Gerry Adams the cold shoulder. He argues for continued inclusion, but that Gerry Adams must prove himself not to be another Arafat - as it is now expressed in common parlance in Washington.

Peter King is one of the chuckies' strongest advocates in the USA, I remember a few years ago he tried to intervene to prevent the PSNI co-operating with the FBI on training.

Then again given the way the winds are blowing it is to be expected that he would stand alongside GWB.

With respect, Pete King is about as far as you can be from GWB and still be in the Republican House Caucus. I think it was John McCain who once retorted about King that the only republican he ever went to bat for was in West Belfast.
King making a statement like that is the real deal - though King isn't going as far as some people are making him out. He's saying the IRA should go out of business. He also predicted in 2003 that SF would join the policing boards.
When he says that Sinn Fein need to break with IRA and call for its disbandment, now - not when some new hypothetical set of criteria have been met - then King is really on new ground.
PS - Vincent Browne prog on now on RTE for those interested.

I used to live in King's district and I've seen that McCain quote bandied around a fair bit recently, but I don't get it at all. His voting record is here:

http://tinyurl.com/5fh6g

He's probably not the worst of them at this point, but among the highlights: "Rated 0% by NARAL, indicating a pro-life voting record" "Rated 14% by the ACLU, indicating an anti-civil rights voting record" "Rated 18% by the NEA, indicating anti-public education votes" "Rated 27% by the AFL-CIO, indicating an anti-labor voting record" and so on and so forth. He seems pretty on board with GWB to me.

Thanks for the informed comments. My knowledge of King is restricted only to his contributions to our little problem here, so I will bow to more knowledgeable contributors.

King gets most of his bad rep among (US) Republicans because he voted against impeaching President Clinton.

Shoot, the Republican movement is losing the support of a fickle American reactionary.
