February 26, 2005 It's ALL good, Gary.. Really! John, of Irish Eagle fame, points out that the anonymous genius 'Dutch kid' is anonymous no more!.. and he's not Dutch - nor was he ever, for that matter - His name is Gary Brolsma.. and he's a 19 year old amateur videographer from New Jersey and he was lip-synching to "Dragostea Din Tei" a Romanian pop tune, which, seemingly, roughly translates to "Love From the Linden Trees".. so now you know. As reported in the NY Times, he had initially embraced his well-deserved fame as a dancing fiend.. but not for long - talk show appearances have been cancelled and he, apparently, is now living as a virtual recluse.. the burden of that difficult second video clip torments him - How can he top what has gone before? Let me just echo what John has already said on his blog, and add that the thought that I had contributed to this guy's misery did cross my mind, briefly. But he hadn't been duped, he hadn't had the clip stolen or posted without his knowledge. He made it, and posted it, himself. And it IS a GENIUS clip! That's why everyone.. well.. most of us.. well.. some of us.. linked to it. Dude.. listen to what your friend, Corey Dzielinski, says in the NY Times article - "Gary this is your one chance to be famous - embrace it" Kieran Healy's a bit incredulous about the NYT article: http://www.crookedtimber.org/archives/003283.html
Posted by: daithimacmhaolmhuaidh Well.. he makes the same point about the comparison with the Star Wars kid video that John makes, and I agree with, namely it's not comparable. But his point, such as it is, seems superfluous. It's not simply that the guy is "doughy", as the NY Times puts it, or "overweight" as Kieran puts it either. What he doesn't acknowledge, but the NY Times does, obliquely, is the timing in the video clip - if it wasn't for the choreography of the raised eyebrows with the music or the lip-synching.. if that wasn't so well done, it wouldn't be so hilarious.
Posted by: peteb i might add that it's the expression of joyful freedom that i find appealing gary brolsma's video...he just cuts loose!...i find his dramatic performance reminiscent of the late john belushi...it's too bad the fame has become a pain for gary...he's let the world have a big smile...and it's not a smile because his video is stupid...it's a smile for his formerly secret talent for taking the video format and making his own unique creative statement...i think his video is brilliant!
Posted by: d. burr The guy at Crooked Timber's a little too cool for me. Yes, Brolsma definitely is entertaining us and intended to do so. He's funny in a way that makes it look like it takes no effort for him to be funny. Yet, I think it's pretty well established that a lot of very funny people are often pretty damn insecure. If Brolsma's in that category then it's no wonder that he's now feeling uneasy about his exposure - even if nobody is really laughing at him. What Kieran should have said is that publications like the humorless NY Times are probably feeding that insecurity by giving this guy the idea that most people wouldn't find such a performance amusing. I suspect that Brolsma just needs a lot of reassurance.
Posted by: nuzhound "I suspect that Brolsma just needs a lot of reassurance." Yeah, the newsbiz will drive this kid over the edge and leave him for road kill without a second thought. But ..... Kind thoughts from an in-your-face New Yorker? ... For Jersey? .......... All is changed, changed utterly
