February 18, 2005 Dissident amongst those lifted by Gardai It's important to remember that we are talking about arrests, not charges as yet. But it seems that the Garda operation has netted a dissident Republican along with the two Sinn Fein members. Curiouser and curiouser! RTE also have a piece on it. Are the Real IRA capable of an operation like the Northern Bank job?
Posted by: George Does the 'freelancers' option come back into play? Or was it a 'joint operation'?
Posted by: Mick Fealty Dissident dissidents ? Have PIRA been running double agents within RIRA and CIRA ?
Posted by: Davros Davros has probably hit the nail on the head.
Posted by: Jacko NEWS-ALERT NEWS-ALERT NEWS-ALERT NEWS-ALERT NEWS-ALERT A very excitable Charlie Bird of RTE is running with a statement just released by the IRA's P. O'Neill. Just caught the tail end of it but in essence it goes something like this: The IRA has declared that it has disassociated itself from what it describes as "...those lying, thieving scum, Sinn Fein.." P. O'Neill has accused the Shinners of bringing republicanism into disrepute and sullying the good name of the IRA. This one will run and run.
Posted by: Jacko Martin McGuinness has just re-acted to the latest P. O'Neill statement. Speaking from a bunker in Sligo he too welcomed the statement and said: "I have always said that Sinn Fein have nothing whatsoever of a constructive nature to offer to the peace process. We, the true republicans, will not be deflected by these people from pursuing a peaceful democratic settlement in Ireland. Sinn Fein should just pack up their bags and go home. They're yesterday's men - and women" Gerry Kelly, speaking to reporters in Belfast, simply said: "Where the f... does that leave me."
Posted by: Jacko So already, out of seven, then there were five. Of the five, one alleged dissident has been charged with IRA membership (note nothing to do with money laundering). It looks already that everything will come down to the financier and his partner and what can be nailed on them. Unless there is an IRA charge for the ex councillor.
Posted by: Pat Mc Larnon UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness have just released a joint statement. They are claiming that the only Gerry Kelly they know is a big bearded guy who has a show on UTV on a Friday night. They dismissed claims to the contrary as being part of a complex securocrat plot.
Posted by: Jacko Newsline and UTV Live are well worth watching tonight on the web. UTV left the camera running after the interview and McGuinness joked about not answering a certain question. On the BBC he denied knowing Hanlon, then the Beeb showed pics of the two chatting. It made SF look very silly.
Posted by: Belfast Gonzo
Posted by: ShayPaul Gonzo The media is scenting blood. UTV would never have aired that in usual circumstances. The BBC thing in particular was excellent - they might just as well have said: "McGuinness is a liar."
Posted by: Jacko UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE Reports are coming in that a big skinny guy and his partner of many years have fled their home in North Belfast. Former friends have quoted the big skinny guy as saying they were travelling to, "...anywhere but Bolton." Meanwhile, the PSNI are appealing for a 15-year-old Belfast girl who has been missing from her home since early this afternoon to contact her parents as soon as possible.
Posted by: Jacko Jacko, it wasn't even funny the first time, sorry.
Posted by: Pat Mc Larnon Pat By the way, just to change the subject, I hear the Who are re-releasing their single "Won't get Fooled Again."
Posted by: Jacko Pat
Posted by: Jacko Jacko, i'm still waiting for you to put an argument forward, something you have singularly failed to do since arriving on site. Anyway to serious contributors, RTE have reported that those originally arrested in Cork yesterday may soon be released.
Posted by: Pat Mc Larnon Boys, boys, boys. If you want to have hissy fit with each other please take it elsewhere - Yellow Card apiece!
Posted by: Mick Fealty McGuinness has become the Vicky Pollard of the Republician movement:
Posted by: JC47 Mick, follow the thread, is Jacko's contribution the type you want on a serious discussion. Please free to make it red any time you like.
Posted by: Pat Mc Larnon In an item of real news the former SF councillor arrested and who apparently was carrying the 'smoking gun' was released without any charges being pressed. So at this juncture on one person charged with being in the Real IRA has been charged.
Posted by: Pat Mc Larnon Furthermore, the only money linked to the bank robbery thus far, has been found at the RUC country club the Newforge Country Club. Does'nt look to bad for Sinn Fein now. It was securocats what done it!!!
Posted by: PaddyCanuck Is this a hint from Gerry ? "I'm not in politics for the good of my health. I'm not in politics for ministerial office. I‚m not in politics for the big salary. I know that there are a lot of people in politics, in all the parties, who are motivated to give public service. I think that I still have a role to play in terms of the peace process and in terms of the equality agenda and in terms of the changes that I believe are required in the island of Ireland and I want to see a united Ireland. [my emphasis] Gerry Adams calls on people to be measured in their comments
Posted by: Davros PC - has that been confirmed about Newforge ?
Posted by: Davros It is been reported widely on BBC, RTE etc. Keystone Cops are saying that the money at Newforge is an attempt at detracting attention away from raids in the south. What a laugh! It was the securocrats wot dun it! Sinn Fein men released without charge, within around 24 hours, Garda intelligence does not look to hot.
Posted by: PaddyCanuck Have any of them reported that there has been confirmation that the money WAS from The Northern Bank Raid ?
Posted by: Davros "Have any of them reported that there has been confirmation that the money WAS from The Northern Bank Raid ?"` Not yet. My Saturday Irish Times story and their breaking news on the web still say it "may" be part of the Northern Bank loot.
Posted by: James "Have any of them reported that there has been confirmation that the money WAS from The Northern Bank Raid ?"` From todays indo (online):
Posted by: maca Maca - we were discussing the money found in Newforge.
Posted by: Davros Oops. Sorry. ;) Note to self: read previous posts.
Posted by: maca How's Finland ? Have the raids and the McCartney murder had a lot of coverage ?
Posted by: Davros There was mention of the raids alright. No mention of the McCarthy murder, I wouldn't expect it.
Posted by: maca I told everyone days ago that I didn't care who started what. Play the ball, and play on.
