January 12, 2005 New Northern Bank notes? Another sense of humour trial. We've just had these sent in from a reader (of a decidedly Unionist bent):
![]()
![]() any particular reason why martin is 20 quid ahead of gerry?!
Posted by: unionist_observer I don't think it works like that, and because the lower denomination would be in wider circulation it could be assumed to be a greater honour. George Washington is on the single US note if memory serves.
Posted by: smcgiff Come to think of it, are Jerry and Martin so far fetched when you've got the current Queen on GB notes?
Posted by: smcgiff The Queen is only on Bank Of England notes (and only one side if I remember correctly). Ulster Notes ( Northern Bank, Ulster Bank, First Trust and Bank of Ireland) and Scottish Notes (Bank Of Scotland, Royal Bank Of Scotland, Clydesdale and TSB???) do not feature the Queen but famous Scottish / Ulster people or places.
Posted by: Alan2 Getting away from the intended humour slightly. Do Scottish Sterling notes have the same difficulty with recognition, that I've heard NI notes have, in England Wales (and the ROI for that matter)?
Posted by: smcgiff "(of a decidedly Unionist bent):" He's a pussy. The people who really know how to hate circulate three dollar bills featuring the object of their disaffection.
Posted by: James Can be tricky smcgiff, Scorttish notes are often refused in London. Less problematic along the borders.
Posted by: Davros Tempted to say those notes are a couple of duds that'll be useless in a few weeks.
Posted by: Pat Mc Larnon I hear they were going to put P.O'Neill on the £5 but they couldn't find a picture!
Posted by: twinkilcooleywithcoxsdemesne Fecking things are heading round on chain mail now!
Posted by: PS It is, out of interest, entirely legal to reject Scottish or NI notes, even in their respective jurisdiction. They are printed under licence but do not officially constitute legal tender. Only 'Bank of England' notes are, right across the UK.
Posted by: IJP Very interesting IJP! So these notes may not be legal tender, but stamps are (as far as i recall). The law is indeed an ass!
Posted by: PS Why not convert to euros and save us all the bother.
Posted by: Brecht Amen to that Brecht!
Posted by: Davros Don't be ridiculous Davros and Brecht, why on earth would you want to exchange our lovely unique currency for a fitful of mundane euro notes?
Posted by: unionist_observer Peaceful progress.
Posted by: Davros "He's a pussy. The people who really know how to hate circulate three dollar bills featuring the object of their disaffection" I agree entirely that you get a much better vintage of vitriol in the US, but I'm doing my best, so stop calling me a pussy
Posted by: davidbrew There is a shop in Darlington that displays the sign - "Due to the high number of forged Scottish Pound notes - We no longer accept them - Thank you" Think about it !!
Posted by: Andy N
(very funny though!)
Posted by: John S IJP, correction. Bank of England notes are valid tender only in England and Wales, and not elsewhere in the UK. Banknotes printed elsewhere are not valid legal tender anywhere in the UK. The reason for differing banknotes and legal tender across the UK goes back a few hundred years. It would save a lot of bother if everyone used the same banknotes, then again it would make life slightly easier for criminals and counterfeiters.
