November 17, 2004 Guess who...? TV viewers in the Netherlands have voted murdered right-wing politician Pim Fortuyn the greatest Dutchman of all time. No prizes for guessing who came second... Weird choice but then again not mine.
Posted by: cg Agreed cg - it's so obvious that Wm III was the greatest Dutchman of all time.
Posted by: Davros Indeed Davros, indeed
Posted by: cg I was going to ask you if you thought him a greater man than Oliver Cromwell, but thought I might be pushing my luck ;)
Posted by: Davros Davros you have definitly crossed the line, for which there is no return.
Posted by: cg I have a lot more respect for Bobby Sands than I have for most paramilitaries cg. Will that do ?
Posted by: Davros Good man Davros but you ment to say Revolutionaries
Posted by: cg Shhhhhh - you'll lose SF $$$$$$$ - just looking at a bad picture of a Mural, Shiels Street Belfast 1998 - Che Guevara and Republican Prisoners reading one of his books.
Posted by: Davros Davros,
Posted by: Jonathan McCullough I don't jest. For all his faults, which obviously are measured against my standards and others will disagree, Sands was head and shoulders above others such as Lenny Murphy. An intelligent young man, a tragedy that he is dead. He could have done so much more alive and although I disagreed with his politics and totally disagree with his actions that placed him in the Maze, he is deserving of respect.
Posted by: Davros it's so obvious that Wm III was the greatest Dutchman of all time. Actually it was William III's Grandfather, William the Silent, who came second in the poll, ands who probably should have come first. After all, he led his country in a war of independence, kicked out an imperial monarchy and founded a republic.
Posted by: Tom Griffin Great-grandfather even http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_I_of_Orange
Posted by: Tom Griffin you'd have thought they could have found room for Dennis Bergkamp, the genius of Highbury in the top three as well
Posted by: davidbrew Arsenal ? spits .....
Posted by: Davros Ruud Van Nistlerooy anybody? Bloody Andorrans have him injured i see.
Posted by: PS What have the Andorrans ever done for us? :-)
Posted by: smcgiff Wrong William of Orange guys as Tom Griffin points out it was the first one. Its a bit strange having him second greatest dutchman because as their national anthem in his honuour says " I am of German blood". They had Johan Cruijf as one of the guys nominated. It was a bit sad watching his supporter trying to explain why Cruijf was the greatest Dutchman ever. DIdnt quite match the other candidates
Posted by: Jeremy congratulations to Andorra for having performed this great service to sport.
Posted by: davidbrew Sands is worthy of no respect. Someone who had so little respect for human life is not worthy of respect himself.
